PANCHKULA: To say that Sumit Mehta, 28, is a picture of grit is a serious understatement. Suffering muscular dystrophy since birth because of which he can neither walk nor sit properly, Sumit is a tech whiz who leads his software company from the front even though he has to stay in bed all day.
A resident of Sector 16, Panchkula, Sumit has done regular studies only for four years.
"But I have done two bachelors degrees and a Masters in Computer Application (MCA), with the help of my parents and through the internet. My parents started taking me to school when I was in Class IV. For two years I studied with differently-abled kids and then with regular kids. But after four years it became difficult for me to pursue regular studies," said Sumit. However, his interest in music and computer programming pushed him on. "So I first did graduation in Indian classical music, then Bachelors in computer applications (BCA)," he added.
In 2002 his father bought him a computer and then there could be no looking back. "I loved programming so much that I learned C++, Microsoft visual basic 6 and even some difficult things like Microsoft.net by only devouring computer books and surfing the internet for hours," he said.
But Sumit"s achievements go beyond even this. He has done a number of stage shows and given vocal performances.
Sumit emphasizes that the road thus far was very tough. "There were times I would cry seeing friends play but I never shared it with my parents. I think one should take life as positive as possible and feelings of discouragement are temporary. I think one should take life as it comes and do his best," said Sumit.
He proudly declares that his parents are his biggest support. "Even my elder brother sacrificed much of his childhood for my sake as my parents were always preoccupied with me. Now, I keep striving to make them proud," he said.
